A Martha’s Vineyard vacation is a bucket-list item that provides a host of exceptional experiences, be they sailing, kayaking, farm-to-table food, hiking, art events, film festivals or celebrity spotting. But one of our favourites is the stunning sunsets that are visible here from land and sea. A perfect way to end a perfect day on this magical New England island.
So that begs the question of where to head to get the best sunset!
- Menemsha
If you want to join the crowds and enjoy a Larsen’s lobster roll with a glass of wine (don’t forget to bring your wine with you) on the beach applauding the sun as it disappears into the sea head to the beautiful fishing village of Menemsha.
- Tashmoo Beach
A beautiful spot in Vineyard Haven where you can stand on the beach at the inlet to Lake Tashmoo watching the yachts come home as the sun dips into Vineyard Sound . The drive down the dirt road is bumpy getting there but well worth the adventure.
- Aquinnah (Lighthouse or Outermost Inn)
Right at the tip of Martha’s Vineyard at its western most edge is a prime location to see the sun’s fiery colours in all their glory. Either head for the lighthouse or treat youself to dinner at The Outermost Inn for the ultimate dinner with a show!
- From A boat in Vineyard Sound
The ultimate Vineyard experience is to charter a sail boat or join the crew of the Alabama with Black Dog Tall Ships or go full Captain Sparrow with Pirate Boat Adventures for a sunset sail.
- Lambert’s Cove
Besides being one of the prettiest beaches on the island this Caribbean-esque beach boasts gorgeous sunsets. Take a picnic and feast your eyes as well as your appetite.
- Vineyard Haven Harbor & Garde East Restaurant
Although you’re facing away from the setting sun the light that spreads across the harbor and the moored yachts is breathtaking. Enjoy harbor front dining at Garde East and watch the sky dance through an array of glorious colours.
- Menemsha Hills or Cedar Tree Neck
Take one of these lovely and simple hikes out to the overlook or beach and watch the sunset away from the crowds. - West Chop
Drive out past the lighthouse and rub shoulders with the old money of the Vineyard out on pretty West Chop in Vineyard Haven. The sun sets out over the Elizabeth Islands. - The Great Ponds on the South Shore
Often overlooked are the sunsets that occur over the great ponds on the south side of the island. Looking west across Tisbury Great Pond, Oyster Pond or Edgartown Great Pond provides a chance to capture the sun’s descent from the south.
- From the Ferry!
If you get your timing right you can be treated to one of the best sunset views as you arrive or leave the island on the Steamship Authority ferry. As simple as that!
Safe Travels,
Simon
