Valentine’s Day on Martha’s Vineyard

Valentine's Day Martha's Vineyard

February, the month of love, is fast approaching and though there are many reasons to lament the month, even its negatives have romantic twists:
– February is hands down the trickiest month to spell because of that pesky silent “r”. But we have Latin to thank for the “r”. Latin is the language of the Romans from where the word “romance” originates. Maybe the additional “r” is indeed for “romance”!
If history had been less kind it could have left us with the Saxon name for February (Solmonath meaning “mud” month). Some people’s Valentine’s Day may indeed include mud but that’s an entirely different blog.
– Groundhog Day is in February forcing us to watch endless looping of Island local Bill Murray on TV. But it’s also a metaphor for rebirth and celebration of the arrival of Spring, when love is in the air.
– February is the coldest month (OK a bit of a northern hemisphere bias on this one) so perfect for staying under the covers with your loved one!

So talking of loved one why not plan a romantic escape this February and spend Valentine’s Day on Martha’s Vineyard.
Wrap up warm and explore the island’s stunning beaches, where a sprinkling of fresh snow may be drifting across the sand. All beaches are accessible at this time of year and beautiful spots like Lucy Vincent Beach, Lambert’s Cove Beach, Quansoo Beach, Long Point Beach and Tashmoo Beach will all be deserted.

Hike some of the picturesque trails or join in the Polly Hill Arboretum guided walk on Saturday before Valentine’s to learn about the range of flora across the island. Featherstone Center For the Arts launches it’s season with the “Kiss Kiss Hug Hug RED I Love Art” exhibition from the day before Valentine’s for the whole week. Then for the fit and fearless, on the Saturday after Valentine’s Day you can get your heart racing by taking part in the MV 20Miler run in Vineyard Haven. Then after the run head up to Chilmark for the annual Pot Luck Jam with food aplenty and great local music.

Check out the stores in Vineyard Haven and then head to Rockfish in Edgartown, Sweet Life Cafe in Oak Bluffs or Salvatore’s in Vineyard Haven for the evening and enjoy a romantic dinner.

Check out our Martha’s Vineyard Valentine’s Getaway package and come visit the island!

Safe travels,
